Frequency Response Measurement & Correction

HiFiMan Susvara frequency

HiFiMan Susvara phase response

The Susvara has a bit of a ragged frequency response with a -6 dB dip in the frequency response right where our ears are the most sensitive (2 kHz). This pushes the lead vocals and instruments too far back in the mix. Then the +4dB peak at 4 kHz over emphasizes the upper midrange of the voice which starts to sound overly sibilant. The bass starts to roll off at 90 Hz and is -4 dB down at 20 Hz.

A phase response chart is included showing this headphone’s polarity is primarily inverted with phase anomalies throughout the critical midrange area. This results in a slight blurring of the image, especially depth of field.

Engaging the high-resolution FIR filter optimizes the frequency response of the Susvara where lead vocals and instruments now have presence and brought forward in the mix. The response extends flat to 20 Hz adding low frequency weight to the sound. Returning the phase response to ideal minimum phase opens the sound stage of these headphones with an increased depth of field.
