Frequency Response Measurement & Correction
The HD6XX/HD650 measures with a smooth midrange but has an upper bass hump of +2dB from 70Hz to 400 Hz which gives the headphone the illusion of bass with a warm sound. The actual bass response is over -10 dB down at 20 Hz. While smooth through the midrange, the Sennheiser “house sound” with the peaky 5 kHz means that the high frequencies dominate the sound signature. Listening fatigue comes on quickly.
Engaging the high-resolution convolution filter transforms these headphones into a highly accurate sound reproducer resulting in the “best bang for the buck” headphones. Flat response to 40 Hz and -3 dB down at 30 Hz provides real bass for these open back headphones. Removing the peak at 5 kHz smooths out the response for long-term listening enjoyment with no listening fatigue.
Note the frequency response of the HD6XX and the HD650 are virtually identical. This convolution filterset can be used with either headphone with excellent results.
